Los Angeles, CA · Higher-cost market
What to budget in Los Angeles
For a basic job in Los Angeles, red oak, solid, straight lay, prefinished, expect roughly $9–20 / sq ft for boards and installation. That is the higher-cost market adjustment applied to our national cost model; your installer’s measured quote is what counts.
| Room | Basic install |
|---|---|
| 250 sq ft (living room) | $2,150–4,920 |
| 500 sq ft (main floor) | $4,300–9,840 |
| 1,000 sq ft (large home) | $8,590–19,680 |
Red oak, solid, straight lay, 10% waste, material and labor only. Excludes removal, subfloor repair, finishing and trim.
Add removal of an old floor and minor subfloor prep and a 500 sq ft job lands nearer $5,510–13,090 ($11–26 / sq ft).
What affects the price in Los Angeles
- Slab and raised foundations. Slab homes usually call for engineered or glue-down floors with a moisture check. Raised foundations allow nail-down solid wood.
- Mild, dry climate. Humidity swings are smaller than in many regions, but acclimation and expansion gaps still matter.
- Condo requirements. Multi-family buildings frequently set sound-transmission limits, which affects underlayment choice and cost.

Before you hire
- Get at least three written quotes that list square footage, waste, product, subfloor work and removal separately.
- Ask whether the installer carries liability insurance and any licence your state or city requires.
- Confirm acclimation time and the schedule, and who moves furniture and cleans up.
