Houston, TX · Lower-cost market
What to budget in Houston
For a basic job in Houston, red oak, solid, straight lay, prefinished, expect roughly $7–15 / sq ft for boards and installation. That is the lower-cost market adjustment applied to our national cost model; your installer’s measured quote is what counts.
| Room | Basic install |
|---|---|
| 250 sq ft (living room) | $1,710–3,850 |
| 500 sq ft (main floor) | $3,410–7,710 |
| 1,000 sq ft (large home) | $6,830–15,420 |
Red oak, solid, straight lay, 10% waste, material and labor only. Excludes removal, subfloor repair, finishing and trim.
Add removal of an old floor and minor subfloor prep and a 500 sq ft job lands nearer $4,270–10,000 ($9–20 / sq ft).
What affects the price in Houston
- Heavy humidity. Constant moisture in the air favors engineered boards and a well-conditioned home. Solid wood needs careful acclimation.
- Slab-on-grade homes. Concrete slabs need a moisture test before flooring, and a vapor barrier is typical.
- Flood history. In flood-prone areas, ask installers about water-resistant options and subfloor inspection.

Before you hire
- Get at least three written quotes that list square footage, waste, product, subfloor work and removal separately.
- Ask whether the installer carries liability insurance and any licence your state or city requires.
- Confirm acclimation time and the schedule, and who moves furniture and cleans up.
